Heading of a group of more than 30 engineers & software developers working on a converged IP triple-play platform, capable of serving tens of thousands of customers with Internet, Telephony and TV using ADSL2+ and FTTH (fiber to the home) connections. Integration of complete solution, starting from satellite receiving head-end to IPTV set-top boxes installed at customer premises. Projects under my responsibilities included backbone network design and deployment, ADSL2+ DSLAM tender evaluation, development of IPTV middleware, DSL/STB provisioning, and billing modules.

Telecom Infrastructure
Design of telecom and ISP networks based on Cisco routers/switches, utilizing GigE, ATM and Frame-Relay connections. Implementation of BGP/OSPF-based routing, high QoS and SLA standards in IP networks. Implementation of TDM circuit emulation services on top of IP infrastructure.
R&D for Telecom Infrastructure Monitoring

R&D of prepaid card system
A system for prepaid cards for Internet usage was developed and installed. Access method supported are dial-up, thin clients and hotspots. The system includes the server applications, as well as web-based operator backend. Operating system software (based on Linux) was developed for thin clients and hotspots.
R&D of Internet Access software for thin clients
Linux-based Internet access software (web browsing, e-mail, chat) for Nagasaki thin client hardware was designed and written. Prepaid card system was utilized as the billing backend. Goal of the project was to provide reliable vandal-proof software which would run without need for any system administrator attendance. All of user controlled configuration is temporary and automatically erased after the user logs out, all system files are read-only. This leaves out possibility of any tampering with the system configuration and installation of trojans.
R&D of wireless router / CPE
WISP-Dist, an embedded OS for wireless routers based on Linux, was developed. Entire system fits in 8 MB flash/16 MB RAM. WISP-Dist provides an open, customizable and easy to use solution for wireless routers.
R&D of Hotspot solution
Based on WISP-Dist a hotspot solution with client zero-network configuration was developed, with payment based on prepaid cards and credit methods.
Highly Available Services
RADIUS, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, MYSQL, TFTP, HTTP/FTP proxy and various other services were implemented in cluster fail-over modes. Necessary modifications were made to the applications in order to support HA modes. Mail server software source code (Exim, Courier IMAP) was modified to support replication of mailboxes.
R&D of cluster for IP traffic accounting and billing
A traffic billing system based on Cisco Netflow protocol was developed and installed. The core of the system is a five server MOSIX distributed calculation cluster which is used to perform detailed analysis of NetFlow traffic in real time.

Worked under various projects, including:

Design and implementation of a network for an ISP
An IP network consisting of over 7 geographically distant points and 10 servers was designed and put to production use. Each point was connected via a leased line (asynchronius/synchronius/SBNI) or radio-Ethernet connection, with OSPF protocol running to ensure correct routing between hosts and rerouting to backup channels in case of a link failure. Most of the hardware were usual PCs with network/leased line/multiport/watchdog boards running Linux thus saving much money compared to a network built using dedicated hardware (such as Cisco routers and Livingston Portmasters). The connection to Internet was done using two satellite links (one symmetric 64Kbit and one assymetric 800Kbit) and one terrestrial line acting as a backup. Policy routing was set up in order to route different types of traffic to different types of outbound Internet links.
A centralised monitoring system based on SNMP and custom local agent was set up to implement 24-hour monitoring of the network status and alerting the network operators in case of a failure on any of the network points/servers.
Custom billing software was written in C and Perl with the following features:
- Both credit and prepayed type of service
- A user-friendly WWW interface (done via CGI scripting) provides the user with the ability to look at the amount of money and services he has spent and subscribe/unsubscribe from the services
- Automatic billing/blocking of user accounts
- Billing databases reside on a SQL server, which allows for flexible and easy retrieval of information
- Database files are stored on a RAID-5 array to prevent data loss
A firewall was set up to protect the internal network from hostile users in the Internet.
Translation of software and documentation for Saturn C satellite system by Nera AB
Saturn C (satellite communication for ships) software was fully cyrillised and translated to Russian, with some Saturn C hardware changes in order to correctly support the Russian character set.
Documentation in PageMaker and FreeHand format was fully translated and printed.
Deployment of Citrix WinFrame based network of terminals for Novorossiysk Land Cometee.
The Land Cometee had several dozens of old 386/486 PCs running Windows 3.1 without a central network. The task was to find the least expensive solution for connecting all the PCs to a central database and making PCs run the latest office products. Citrix Winframe was selected as the best solution under those conditions. 10-megabit Ethernet network was set up with a powerful server running Citrix WinFrame acting as a terminal server for PCs which connected to it as clients, therefore permitting PCs to run the latest memory/CPU intensive applications.
Design and programming of a fax server with a PSTN/email/WWW interface
The task was to build fax server software for use within a big company with several branches which permits ordinary fax machine users to connect to it and send faxes all over the world at better rates than of local telecom. In order to do this a fax server system was designed, programmed and built with several server nodes installed in different countries at branch locations, permitting faxes to be routed at the place with the least per-minute destination call price. When the user calls in he gets an easy to use IVR voice interface with nested menus (such as sending a fax, balance enquire, change of configuration) and integrated help. Besides PSTN, e-mail, WWW and Microsoft Windows interfaces were implemented.
The server software was written under Linux in C and Perl with databases residing on a central SQL server. All the server nodes were interconnected via Internet using encrypted tunnels.

Worked/work on several Internet-related projects, including architectural design and programming of a big portal website based on Linux+Apache+Sybase+Embperl combination.

Multi-user Dial-UP Server based on DOS and NOVELL Personal NETWARE platform and MAXIMUS software was designed and integrated on 2 PCs and 4 modems.
In 1997 System was re-engineered using LINUX to include major INTRANET services (WWW, FTP, NNTP, Chat). System is still working and provides access for free via standard WWW browsers for over 400 interested users within Novorossiysk.
